Network login fails—system error 86 after system changes
Our daughter and son-in-law recently received a replacement PC for one that had a motherboard component failure during warranty. The computer is an entirely different and more recent model. During a recent visit I helped them with the transition to the new computer and upgraded the operating system on the laptop from Vista 64-bit to Windows 7 64-bit. Everything went very well except that I couldn't do a network login from the laptop (Windows 7 Pro 64-bit) to the desktop (Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit). I created a home group in Windows 7 (on the desktop initially) for the local home networking. Network logins from the desktop to the laptop work fine (no problem mapping drives, etc.). Network logins from the laptop to the desktop, however, always produce a system error 86- The specified network password is not correct. I have tried the registry hack at http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itpronetworking/thread/0587ff73-980a-44a1-be3c-3480ecab5505/ but it makes no difference. BTW, I can ping successfully from the laptop to the desktop. Any idea what is going on here and how to fix it? They need to be able to print through the desktop. Does Windows 7 Premium allow network drive mapping, net logins??? If not, what are the options here? My daughter absolutely requires drive mapping in the other direction (desktop-to-laptop) for MirrorFolder to sync her work.
